There is no magic number of college applications to submit. Seniors will typically apply to one or two reach schools, a number of target schools, and a couple of likely, or what we call "foundation" schools.
Reach colleges tend to have lower acceptance rates and sometimes higher sticker prices. A reach school, is defined on a personal level by the academic profile of the student in comparison to profiles of other students--cumulative G.P.A., academic rigor, and test scores.
For a target school, you will find that your academic profile falls within the schools published admitted student data. Likely schools also have an acceptance rate between 30-60% and often offer relatively affordable tuition.
A foundation school will often have an acceptance rate of 60% or higher.
